Scientific monitoring and protect marine megafauna in the Mediterranean Sea

With Explore & Preserve

Combine rigorous scientific fieldwork with environmental education

Twelve monthly sea surveys aboard two vessels will cover a 40-nautical-mile transect from Porquerolles to the Toulon canyon — a zone within the Pelagos Sanctuary that has never before been systematically monitored. The scientific protocol, designed by Professor Hervé Glotin (CNRS, Université de Toulon), uses passive acoustic hydrophones and photo-identification to track cetaceans including sperm whales, fin whales, and Risso's dolphins, while floating debris is collected and characterized under an OFB protocol. Data will be shared with the Parc national de Port-Cros, the Pelagos Sanctuary, and the European EUROPAM project. Three of the twelve outings will be open to the public as participatory science experiences, and the findings will feed into school workshops, marina outreach sessions, and a public roundtable.

How each survey works

01

Departure from Le Lavandou at 7 h

Sea state ≤ 3 Beaufort. Crew: 1 captain + 1 mate + 4 observers + 2 scientists aboard Mousquemer or La Mouette.

02

West–East transect at 8 knots

40-nautical-mile loop from Porquerolles south to Port-Cros, Île du Levant, and the Stoechades canyon (continental slope 200–2000 m).

03

4 fixed acoustic listening stops

10–20 min recordings per point with calibrated broadband hydrophone (120 dB dynamic range, GPS + PPS satellite sync). All electronics off during recording.

04

Visual observation between stops

Binoculars, NIKON D500 with 500 mm telephoto. GPS-logged sightings: species, count, group composition, behaviour. Detours permitted for photo-ID opportunities.

05

Debris survey

4 m observation strip at 6 knots. Items categorised by material and size class per OFB protocol; coordinates recorded in decimal degrees.
